Uganda's Ministry of health has disclosed that a total of 99 persons that had contact with the hospital tecnician that died has been quarantined and are being monitored for signs and symptoms of the deadly viral disease after test confirmed that the 30-year old hospital tecnician in a kampala hospital died of the disease. The man was said to have headache, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomited blood before he died.
The virus was first discovered in 1967, after simultaneuos outbreak in Marburg (from which the disease takes it's name) and frankfurt both in Germany, Belgrade, Serbia and Yougoslavia. It was later traced back to monkeys from uganda imported for laboratory work. The most recent outbreak of the virus was also in Uganda in 2012 and it killed 4 out of 15 persons who contracted the disease according to center's for Disease Control and prevention in the United States.
The Marburg virus is similar to the Ebola virus in more than one way, they both cause illnss marked by severe bleeding(haemorrhage) organ failure and in many cases deaths. The Marburg virus is genetically transmisible from animals to man RNA virus of the filovirus family. The reservoir host of the virus is the African fruit bat, which when infected with the virus does not show obvious sign of illness.
